A Chat With: Cory M. Coons

Welcome back to the thrice weekly interview extravaganza we call…A Chat With! This fine Friday morning we will be chatting with Cory M. Coons. Local rocker and honestly one of the nicest guys in music. He ever so graciously played a few tunes for us at our first annual Ottawa Sound Music Awards Ceremony and we wanted to pick his brain, see what makes Cory….Cory. Enough rambling, let’s just jump into it!

1. How would you describe your sound?

I would say it’s a cross between Melodic Rock/Roots-Rock with a hint of Country-Rock.

2. Who are your influences?

Artists like Styx, Bon Jovi, Tom Petty, Bryan Adams, Neil Young, Keith Urban, Beach Boys and many more…

3. What’s on the horizon for your music in 2019/2020?

I’m always writing, and I try to perform as much as I can. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some new nominations this year for my music, which is cool. I am always thankful and honoured by who my music reaches! A few cool events are coming up locally (south of Ottawa) for me at some new venues. So I am looking forward to more!

4. What is your creative process?

There is no one process really, I’m not the “cookie-cutter” kind of writer… Each song and idea is different.
I try to let the ideas and songs guide me, other than trying to force something into light.

5. Where do you draw inspiration from?

Sometimes personal experience, sometimes my surroundings and things that may come through my thoughts or feelings about something, sometimes other music,
and often I like to present a good story that resonates with someone on some level.

6. How do you deal with nerves before a show?

A little “healthy” nervousness is good I believe. Otherwise, if you are too over-confident it could turn out not the way you planned, lol…

7. Fave venue in Ottawa?

The House Of Targ was a cool place to perform for the Ottawa Sound Awards.
There are a couple that are no longer around, that I have played many years ago.
(i.e) Grand Central, and Roxannes. Those were great!

8. Craziest thing you’ve seen at a show?

Hmmm… There a few from my younger days in touring cover bands in the 90’ , not sure I can mention them here? lol!

9. If you could tour/play a show with any line up who would it be?

Tom Petty (Would have been amazing), Styx, Gowan, Bon Jovi Bryan Adams, would be awesome…

10. Advice for new musicians/band

Be as honest and real as you can with your music and your path. People can see right through it if it’s not real!

11. Any shout outs you want to make?

Thanks to The Ottawa Sound for this Opportunity!
MTS Management Group and Michael Stover (Promotions)

12. Social media links/music links
